Congresswoman Biggert on the DeLay rule

Hey Josh — I called Congresswoman Biggert’s office (202-225-3515), and the person who answered the phone said it was a private vote, and would not reveal how Congresswoman Biggert voted. I’ve asked for a call back, will update if/when I hear anything.

In the Illinois delegation, Denny Hastert was in favor of the rule change, while Ray LaHood was against it, as was Mark Kirk.

Update: Josh notes that Biggert’s office has given at least three different answers on this question so far today, never actually revealing how she voted. Impressive.

Later upate: The Naperville Democrats are on the case. Seems there’s still some confusion at Biggert’s office about what the right answer is, and still no word on the Congresswoman’s actual vote. But the staff seems to be settling on the “we’ll send you a letter” stall…

  1. I sent an e-mail to Judy asking her did she vote to leave the current rule in place, or change the rule. No response yet. I'll follow up too.

  2. The Shays Handful

Chris Shays indicated that a handful of Republicans opposed changing the rule to protect Tom DeLay including himself. We now know that Mark Kirk opposed changing the rule as did Ray LaHood. I'll go out on a limb and say...

  3. I just called Tim Johnson's Champaign office, and they say he was not present for the vote.

  4. By the way, for anyone who cares: the Naperville Dems site got hit with a Denial of Service attack shortly after Josh linked to it...

  5. Where They Stand

Or duck in many cases. The Good LaHood and Kirk voted and spoke out against the rule change. The Bad Hastert was for it. The clueless Biggert can't seem to make up her mind. And once Josh Marshall linked to...

  6. I contacted Congressman Weller's office and got nowhere. I followed up with and email but his office never responds to those.

  7. Congresswoman Biggert, What's With Delay?

I called Illinois District 13 Representative Judy Biggert's Washington, D.C. office (202.225.3515) this afternoon and asked what her vote was on the Republican rule change that would permit a criminally indicted House member to stay in leadership (Judy...

  8. Interesting that they would stoop that low. A DDOS attack is a criminal act if I recall correctly. I'm sure the Justice Dept. will get right on that.

  9. Oh, and still nothing from Biggert after a follow up. Wrote to the Trib praising them for their editorial and noted nothing from Judy. We'll see if they publish.

  10. I heard from Fox News Channel that the Republican Party Politicians in the House have to live by a different set of rules than the Democrats.

Is that true? If it is true does that make any sense? Or are you all too blood thirsty for fairness?

  11. “The time has come that the American people know exactly what their Representatives are doing here in Washington. Are they feeding at the public trough, taking lobbyist-paid vacations, getting wined and dined by special interest groups? Or are they working hard to represent their constituents? The people, the American people, have a right to know...I say the best disinfectant is full disclosure, not isolation.”

Congressman Tom DeLay of Sugar Land, Texas, speaking on the floor of the U.S. House, Nov. 16, 1995

That was then, this is now. Since then, tom Delay has become the House Majority Leader and he has:
 Taken all-expenses-paid luxury golf trips charged to a corporate lobbyist's credit card
 Illegally spent over $600,000 in corporate campaign contributions
 Shoved his way into the Terry Schiavo case, taking Congress with him
 Paid tens of thousands of dollars into fellow Congress Members' campaign funds to try to buy their favor
Even our own Congresswoman Judy Biggert of Hinsdale, Illinois, who is on the U.S. House ethics committee that's supposed to police Tom DeLay, has taken his money and has not yet disqualified herself in his case. Please call Rep. Biggert at 630-655-2052 or Fax: 630-655-1061 and e-mail: info@Biggert.com Tell her, Congress can't police itself. We need an independent investigation of Tom DeLay now.
