That's a really good article. One of the better I've seen. A co-worker built his own Tivo using myhtpc (under Windows though) and can say nothing but good things about it. http://myhtpc.net/
Personally, coming from an avid Tivo user (and lover of all things geeky), building your own Tivo is cool but it still doesn't replace how great of a device a "real Tivo" actually is. I know I can't dump the video off onto another computer, etc but the ease of use, flexibility and the "Wife Approval Factor" (which is the most important factor!) make it one of my favorite toys... :)
